HM Submarine C31 was sunk on 4th January 1915 when it struck a mine off the Belgian coast while patrolling near Zeebrugge. There were no survivors and included among those lost was William Monk.  Records, including those of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, show their deaths as 7th January, 1915 but this was when the incident was first reported and recorded.
